Last week I was able to finally take a day trip to Monhegan Island. This is something that I have been wanting to do ever since moving here four years ago. However, between the ferry schedule and my schedule things just never came into alignment, until last week. I took the 9:00 a.m. departure from New Harbor on the
Hardy Boat and hour later we were at the island.

To say that this is a special place is an extreme understatement. Once you leave the harbor area, where the homes and shops are, it is time to enjoy the beauty and nature that surrounds you. There are trails criss-crossing the island that range from an easy walk on level terrain, to trails that hug the shore, 100' plus, above the crashing surf below that require you to climb up and down rock formations. I did some of each and had a wonderful time. If you enjoy being outside and hiking, this is a place that you MUST visit the next time you are visiting the
Newcastle Inn.
